21C.S.9-12.2--Standard 2: Thinking and Reasoning Skills

The student will demonstrate the ability to explore and develop new ideas, to

intentionally apply sound reasoning processes and to frame, analyze and solve

complex problems using appropriate technology tools.

Objectives:

21C.O.9-12.2.TT.1--Student knows how to find information necessary to solve advanced problems related to hardware, software, networks, and connections (e.g., by accessing online help, Internet searches, technical documentation, system utilities, and
communication with technical experts).

21C.O.9-12.2.TT.2--Student collaborates with peers, experts and others to contribute to a content-related knowledge base by using technology to compile, synthesize, produce, and disseminate information, models, and other creative works.

These are pictures taken during the Ohio Regionals FIRST Technical Challenge (Robotics Competition). Beginning in September our robotics team began work on the design and building of our robot for competition. This competition requires us to build a robot to certain specifications that will play the game challenge. In thiese shots, we were required to retrieve 6 inch PVC pipes from a dispenser and deposit them into a movable goal. The end game (pictured below on the left) required us to balance on a platform with our teammate. This required us to collaborate on strategies with our assigned teammate to earn the bonus end game points. In 5he picture on the right, I am working with my drive team partner under the watchful eyes of my coach to make final adjustments before a match. I am proud to say that our team finished the competition rounds with 5 wins and 0 losses. It was a great day for the "Career Center Critters, Team 55".

21C.O.9-12.2.TT.3--Student uses multiple electronic sources of information and multiple technology tools and resources tools (e.g., digital cameras, graphing calculators, probes, mp3 players, handheld devices, other emerging technologies, simulations, models, browsers, word processing, authoring tools, spreadsheets, databases) to collaborate with others, to formulate a hypothesis, to solve problems, make decisions, and present and justify the solutions.

21C.O.9-12.2.TT.4--Student uses technology tools and multiple media sources to analyze a real-world problem, design and implement a process to assess the information, and chart and evaluate progress toward the solution

These are pictures taken during the Pittsburgh Regionals FIRST Robotics Competition. Beginning in January all FIRST teams are given the game challenge and have only six (6) weeks to design, build, and ship our robot to the destination of our competition. This competition requires us to build a robot to certain specifications--a maximimum weight of 120lbs that will play the game challenge; . In thiese shots, we were required to retrieve swimming pool floats from one end of the floor, travel 52 feet to the other end of the playing floor and hang the tube onto pegs. The game requires an alliance of three (3) teams--assigned by random draw each of 12 matches over a period of 2 days--to plan strategy and work together against a second alliance to score the most points. In the picture on the right I am anxiously awaiting the
beginning of our match.
